Busted studs...
« on: March 09, 2009 - 09:11:18 AM »
I've gotten the rear leaf springs out of my 1970 Barracuda after wrestling with almost 40 years of rust and "yuck".  I'm replacing the old rubber suspension gromets with polyurethane.  In the process I've busted off a few studs,  :22yikes: and I'm curious where is the best place to get parts to replace the broken stuff.

First off...U-bolts.  I see Paddock has replacements for ~$80.  Anyone else have a better recomendation?

Second, The lower DS rear shock mount stud.  I twisted off the nut and it broke right where the threads ended.  The shock mount portion is still in tact, but the threaded portion busted off.  This is the plate that the U-bolts bolt thru to hold the leaf springs to the rear axle.  I think I need the whole plate, but looking at the PS bolt on the same plate, it looks to have been broken and welded back on.  Any recomendations?

Third, and last, the studs that hold the front leaf spring mount shackle to the frame...there are 4 studs for each side.  I broke one stud on the DS and one on the PS.  Any recomendations where I can get replacement studs?

It's always a joy twisting on fasteners that have had 40 years to seize themselves together...especially considering the Minnesota winters the car endured early in it's life.

If any pics are needed, let me know...I can get them.

Thanks in advance...

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

Since I took photos...figure I'll post-em...

Limited searching has not found any replacement studs yet.  I'm thinking RT Specialties may have the studs for the forward rear leaf spring mount.  Nothing yet on the shock mount...

Not a problem, I had to pay 3 bucks each, that OK? Postage should be under 5 bucks I would think.

I'll take the 8 off your hands...Sold!

Should I use your 1970 Hamtramck Registry address?

Just curious...did the studs come with nuts and washers, or just studs?

I only have the studs. Email me with your mailing address, I should be able to mail them tomorrow.

The Hammy mailing address is fine, so is a personal check, just make it out to Barry Washington.
