*HELP* Front valance removal on 74 Challenger
« on: February 07, 2009 - 10:26:29 PM »
Hey Guys,

What's the trick to getting that damned thing off? I found the small bolts on the inside of it that connect it to the front fender. I got them loosened as far as they would go and then there was some sort of clip that attaches it to the front fender that was keeping me from being able to loosen it any further. So, what's the trick? I tried getting a screw driver in between where the valance and the fender meet to tap the clip out but it didn't work. Keep in mind I'm 6'5" and 250 lbs so getting my hands/arms into small places isn't easy and becomes very frustrating, grrrrr  :banghead: Makes me think of a classic movie quote "You can't bench press your way out of this".

Thanks,
           James

You need to completely remove the bolts from the clips, no need to remove the u-clip.  You'll also have to remove the bolts from the center section, front of radiator.

My issue is that turning the bolt now turns the clip, which is attached to the metal and is making it so the bolt can't twist any further. Darn thing!

Vise grip the clip to keep it from spinning or just cut it off.

If it's turning the clip must have broke.  This is common as it's thin at the top.  If you can't hold the back of the clip, I'd take a dremel with a cut-off wheel and cut through the bolt.

I'll try getting the vice grips on there and go that route. If not, it's dremel time baby  :woo:

Ok,

So I got the ones underneath all removed and now I'm working on those in the section in front of the radiator. They seem to be smaller sized bolts then the others. I couldn't get my smallest standard socket to fit (7/16). I did however seem to get one loosened with a 10mm metric socket. I couldn't get any of the others loosened with that same socket though, so I'm convinced I need a smaller socket, or they are so rusted/stripped but I'm hoping that's not the case. Does anyone who's done this remember the bolt size (I'm guessing 3/8th's)?
