« on: February 14, 2009 - 06:32:44 AM »
On a real tight budget to get my Duster to the track by April and the plan is to install a stock `79 360/727 I got for a few hundred that came out of a low mileage van/rv.I know the low comp. is the limiting factor but any ideas on how to gain some HP without spending any money? How much nitrous will the stock pistons and lower end befroe she done blows up?  :icon16:

I assume it has the TQ 4 bbl carb , anything to help air flow is the key , K&N air cleaner , better cylinder heads would be key , if you can find some 2.o2 valve heads or the later 308 castings it wil cost for head gaskets & intake gaskets only to swap heads , cam choice will make the biggest difference but would cost a few $ for springs cam & gaskets .Other than that simple tuning will get you a long way

:iagree: Compression isn't the same limiting factor on the SB Mope as it is on some other engines. Nake sure you have 36* total timing at WOT and definately get some big valve 2.02 heads and something like the .474" lift MP cam (or the equivalent in an Engle or Lunati) and a stock Thermoquad manifold & Carb (block the heat) and definately headers, even cheapo ones. That should get you in the 1hp per cube range.

What knid or power increase do you think will I get by just swapping on a better set of heads like the 308`s?

With a stock cam probably nothing. With headers and a better camshaft quite a bit. The cheapest way to better heads that I know of is the Aeroheads from Indy. They don't sell the 308's but you can't beat them for the $$$. You'll spend much more rebuilding junkyard heads.

I have seen as much as 60 HP gain goiung to 308 heads with no other changes but it had headers before & I forget exactly what cam was in there , definatly no stock but mild aftermarket grind
