??Bad relay??
« on: February 25, 2009 - 11:29:43 PM »
I have a original 70 cuda,383 auto with air.Just got the car. While the car is running there is what I am guessing is a relay under the dash that keeps clicking on and off which is drawing a good amount of power(dims lights ,slows down turn signals).Any ideas on what it could be? I disconnected the power to the ac compressor and the draw still remains.   Thanks

Does it sound like a turn signal flasher? are the hazards on? turn signals? etc? There aren't really any factory relays besides the starter, and horn (off the top of my head)

Check & see if the heater fan is staying on, or it could be drawing too much current. Something could also jamming the heater fan?   :2cents:

The only other thing I can think of besides what every body said before now is that the Head lamp switch could be doing that also.  Check your harness going to your ignition also of overheating and shorts causing something to come on like that.  Just wanted to help if I could for you.   :2cents:

Probably a bad voltage regulator shutting the alternator off too long before sensing the need to charge again

I think you will find your emergency flasher is on or wiring associated with it crossed.

Thanks for all your input. Whatever "it" is clicks on for about a minute then shuts off like a repetitive cycle.Everything is working ok, fan is off, signals all work, road lamps and head lite work as they should. The only thing I found was that the dash light dimmer switch has been bypassed.Im still clueless!

There is a time delay relay on some models that have given some members fits in the past...something relating to the heater motor if I recall correctly.
Here is a schematic, you will see the time delay relay near the top a little left of center.
I will search for the thread that dealt with this.

Not the same symptom but on topic

The dimmer switch being by-passed isn't a surprise. They all seem to die eventually. Many of us have done the same, or in my case...replaced it with a toggle switch. My lights are much brighter now on my gauges.

I need to see his feedback score.   :naughty:  I met the man...He is from my hometown. He did give me his address, so I guess I could always send a ticking box if I wasn't happy.   :misbehaving:
