Need help ID this brake set up?
« on: February 23, 2009 - 08:32:25 PM »
Hi All!
Just pulled a wheel off for the first time today. First had to get by the anti theft lug nuts. Can anyone help me ID this  brake set up? The rotor measured just under 11"     ( 10.875")  The rotors are the pin type . This is a 70 Challenger  so I'd assume the spindles are not stock for the year?( should be drums as this was a 6 cyl car originally) I want to use the bigger rotors so is all I need are the caliper brackets and a new pair of rotors? Anyone have some? I see a set on e-bay in non rusty shape with the bolts?
Thanks Brad

It looks like a stock mopar setup to me, someone must have upgraded it with disk spindles at some point. The only question now is whether its the earlier 70-72 type or the later 73-74 type. Can't really tell from you picture if its a 1 or 2 piece rotor design. If its a two piece its definitely a 70-72 type setup, you'll have to change spindles to a 73-74 type to go with the 11.75" rotors. If its a one piece it could be either the early or later setup, you'll have to pull the brakes and check the spindle to be sure. When I redid the brakes for my '72 I found a two-piece rotor on one side and a one-piece rotor on the other  :dunno:, but both had the same exact spindles and neither had any kind of spacer. There must have been a source for the 1 piece rotors awhile back, as my spindles are in fact the earlier design.  I also have the pin type calipers.

Discs were optional on all Challenger models. Even the six cylinder. Those look like 1970-72 brakes to me.
