removing anti theft lug nuts with out the tool??
« on: February 22, 2009 - 01:32:27 PM »
Hi All!
Just got my "Baby" home ( 1970 Challenger ) was going to go over it when I looked at the lug nuts they require a special tool to get them off? I don't have that!
Any idea's??  They have slots milled parallel to the stud where a normal lug nut has the flats for the socket.   Pipe wrench?? They are starting to rust anyhow so they need to be replaced!

Kind of sounds like the lug nuts I just bought from my local Discount Tire store.  The set I bought came with the special attachment.  If you can get a picture I can tell you if they are they same, and then tell you what brand they are so you can get the right tool.

Weld nuts to the end of the locking lug nuts and remove them that way. There is also a tool that the tire shops use to break them off then they just replace the studs.

It's a pain in the neck - but get a heavy duty pipe cutter, then wrench to blade down until the lug nut splits. That's how i've seen it done

A good tire shop has a tool you dive on to the lug nut. You just put a impact on it and spin them off.

I've heard of people using Vise Grips to get off locking lug nuts.
Another trick I've heard is to take a 12 point socket that is slightly too small, pound it on the locking lug nut with a hammer, and then unscrew it with an impact or breaker bar. After you get it off, put it in a vise and tap the socket off with a drift.
Use a Craftsman socket so that if you break it you can take it in and exchange it for a new one!

I just did this last week to a Ramcharger that had locks on it.  I used a 1" China made impact socket (1/2" drive 6 point)  put an old breaker bar on it and hammered the end of the bar straight on the lugnut locks with a 3 pound hammer.
It didn't hurt anything and the lugnuts came right off.  A quick wack on the lugnut popped it off the socket with no problems

If all 20 are splined then it sounds like you have "tuner" style lugnuts. The most popular brand by far is Gorilla. You can go to a local Discount tire and get a wrench for them no problem. If you just have one on each wheel then you have splined locks and will have to use one of the other methods as they do require a special key. Pound on socket method seems to work the best and cause the least damage.

I've done it with the 12 point socket like mentioned just hammer a smaller size on and it should work no problem.  A guy at a tire shop told me to do it that way.

My dad had this same problem with one of his vans, but he had the tool its just that the nut was stripped out. He welded a nut onto the end of the locking one and pulled it off with a regular socket. No hammering required

Those are just spline drive lug nuts, not antitheft.  The sockets used for those are all basically the same except for size.  You should be able to buy a set with the socket at any parts store.  One of my cars has those, and a regular 17mm six point fits them well enough to remove them if I lost the socket.  They arent like the keyed ones that use special sockets that are a PITA to find replacements for.

Bought this tool at Sears today they come in a set. In the words of Tim Allen
" Damn right Sears! "
They worked great!! Justa few taps with a hammer, ratchet wrench and off they came!

I've got a set of those that my son bought me for Christmas a year ago. I've never had to use one, but it's good to know they work!
