Help with trunk lid wheatherstripping installation
« on: February 11, 2011 - 10:57:28 AM »
I am putting my 73 challenger back together and have fogotten how to install the trunk lid weatherstripping. Does anyone have any pictures of where it goes and the direction in which it goes on the car. I have tried to figure it out but I looks like it could go on two different ways and I dont want to mess it up. I will be posting pics of the cars progress from beginning to end under restorations topics later. Thanks Doug

Post a pic of what the weatherstripping looks like.  There are a few different styles used.  I havn't found the correct style for my 73 yet.  Everything I've seen doesn't match what I took off.

I am having the same problem.  I have the rubber with the roounded top opposite the flat end.  I installed it on the flat part of the rubber and now the trunk won't close.   It is forcing the trunk lid really tight and only under force (can't be correct).   Should the rubber piece be mounted on its side (long side flat)??

If anyone has a trunk picture for 1970 .... that would be terrific.   The trunk lids were all the same .... no??   So, I figure that the weatherstripping should be similar.   Advise or comments???

thanks .... Chaps.

I can't help with the position of the gasket. Did you install new quarters? When you do, and then install new drip rails, you have to allow for the seal crush when you're aligning the trunk lid.
Found that out the hard way on another car I did  long time ago. Had to slice the seal in half laterally and use the curved part only. Can you say son of a #####.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I have a 70 Challenger, but I kept quiet on this subject because I believe the 73 weatherstrip is different. I can post a pic tomorrow, but I don't think it will help.

Just to be clear, you are mounting this weatherstrip around the trunk opening and not the trunk lid, right?

Yes .... around the short lip interior to the rain channel or gutter.   I believe that the first gasket I installed, may have been glued on the wrong edge.   I know have a different gasket that is softer and has a channel or Y shaped.   I believe that it needs to be installed with the Y pointing away from the trunk (more compressed).    Does this make sense?

Thanks .... CHAPS

Thanks Jason .... that is very helpful, plus for other areas of the car that I am fussing with.   Love that white Challenger.   Mine is white with a Silver Bumble Bee stripe .... keep the faith!

Cheers .... Gary
