71 Challenger Convertible Top Bleeding
« on: May 18, 2009 - 01:17:13 PM »
Hey guys,

I installed new convertible pump lines on my 71 Challenger and the top is going up and down but slowly. I can see that the lines aren't completly full. Air pockets move around when it goes up or down. How do I bleed the system? Should the lines be completly full with fluid? If I crack a nut to put more fluid in it begins to leak out, more like spew out. I've only been filling it with the top down should it be up? Any suggestions you have are appreciated.

Thanks Dave

They are basically self bleeding. Your pump may be weak.

This is a comon problem ,if all parts are good you dont need all the air out . if you pull the plug out and install a clear hose about 18 inches long and install the other end in a qt of fluid half full , run the top several times till it works smooth .also take your time not to heat the pump and trip a fuse. the reason for the half bottle is so when the pump burps air and fluid you dont over fill the bottle .ad more as needed . when done remove hose and run once more the pump should not be higher than the sight plug ,install plug and hit the road . as the last post mentioned if the pumps week it will by pass fluid and act like a  floor jack thats not tight it pumps but cant keep up ,you can see this in the lines when pumps working and the bubbles hardly move . :2cents:
