Years ago I raced a 69 GTO Ram Air III 4spd, I was running a 68 Cuda 340 4spd S, we ran from a set of lights & were door handle to door handle to 30 mph where my cam really started to work & I pulled to 6000 rpm in first & second & had put about 12+ car lengths on him so I pulled over assuming he had broken something but no , he was giving it all he had
I also raced a 351 Cleveland Mustang with roller cam headers etc he had spent a lot of $$ on the engine & was running 13.2 & had the time slips, I was running my 69 Dart GT which had run 11.5s with the 440 but I had just thrown a running 400 in it & was trying to sell it, we raced 4 times & were dead even!! I later did a compression test on the 400 & it had 1 cly making 40lbs & 2 more under 60 lbs !!
Back in 83 I set up a friends 69 Charger & we were cruising. A 23 T bucket pulled into the lot , every body was standing around it trying to figure out what kind of engine it had & I walked over & was surprised that nobody recognized the engine & identified it as the 409 with dual quads. Later we all pulled out to cruise & who pulls up beside us but the 409 & this thing had to weigh at least 1000 lbs less!! So I look at my friend & said you lose for sure if you don’t at least try so the light goes green & we hole shot him & never saw him again until the next light 1/2 a mile down + he didn’t want to try again either !!
