I understand what the poster was trying to say. It is a sad but true fact that if you consistently cannot spell correctly or use even basic punctuation then yes it does tend to make the person look uneducated. Maybe "not smart" was not the perfect term, ignorant is a better term. Ignorant only means you lack knowledge, not smart means that not only are you ignorant but also that you cannot learn easily.

Smart
Intelligent
Educated

Three different but interrelated concepts.

Smart - how you use what you know/learned.
Intelligent - educated and an ability to use that education
Educated - jumped through the hoops of the education system or training program

If I had a brain tumor I would rather have a different person than if I was lost in the woods of northern Canada.
I know lots of highly educated people who can write beautifully but are complete morons....and even calling them that is an insult to morons!

somedaysoon, I'm not talking about smart, intelligent, educated, or whatever you want to call it. It was never my intention to put anyone down. I'm not an English major. I cannot type. But out of what I suppose is a modicum of respect for others, I try to make the posts somewhat legible and sensible. Sometimes I'll check the spelling on some words I'm not sure of. I "proofread" it before I post it. Just my trip.

And I'm also somewhat of a hypocrite here- some things are important to me, others are not. I have weeds in my yard, holes in my clothes, and dust on my furniture. And I have an $8K paint job on my challenger. I have only seen one or two cars nicer. Big deal. It's just that particular thing was important to me. My clothes aren't. And it's ok if people view language as only a method of transmitting ideas and not an art form. I'm cool with that.

The bigger issue to me, and the reason for the post originally, was it sometimes seems to me sloppy posts are based not on a person's inability to dot an I or cross a t because they slept through English class in high school. It's maybe indifference or laziness. What the heck, let the reader spend the time to interpret it. I don't know. Everyone please chill on this. Like I said earlier, it's just a pet peeve, and I never intended it to be a put-down.

There is a frequent poster to this forum who is either military or ex-military. His posts are always well-thought out, clear and well-written. I was just wondering if it's the discipline of a military life. Discipline begets discipline.

And what's this "fan belt" thingy?

 :iagree:

Sometimes, I like to google parts of sentences I've written, because I'm often uncertain of the composition. It's just to check if anyone else might have written the exact same words, preferably a text that's otherwise well written. If so, then it's most likely ok.
English is my second language, but for me, that's no reason to be sloppy about it. Quite the opposite in fact, since I'm learning and expanding my vocabulary by taking care of my written language.

Sometimes, I stumble across posts that's just one long sentence, which is actually a bit exhausting to read, because it's like listening to someone who talks while inhaling as well as exhaling.
Breaks are important.

Then there are those whose posts SCREAMS at you in caps:

I don't have a problem with poor grammer or spelling if the person isn't from an english speaking country, like Germany, Japan or New Zealand ( hehehe, take that Carlwalski ).  But for the rest of us, take a little pride huh ?

I'm still waiting for the (as promised) cigar. ;D

BTT - I type and spell all words in "txt" messages as whole English words. Not into "txt lingo".
Best way around that for me is tell them to just call. I always call if at all possible. Mano e Mano.

Yall, I live in Texas. I actually did really well in school in the classes that I thought were interesting, but others, and English is one of them, I didn't give two craps about. But I read a lot of books, and that's where I get my grammar. However, I don't speak the same as I write. I still have a tendency to speak in "Texan", if you can call it that. By Texan I mean using lines like "I seen that car over there" or "I ain't gonna do that" and such. But that's how I was raised, and there are people that speak worse than I do around here. It's just the way the English language is spoken around here. It doesn't mean people are dumb.

I work in the oilfield. I know many very intelligent, very smart people that work in this field, and it is a very technical field for those of you who don't know. There is a LOT to making a well produce, you can't just poke a hole in the ground and natural gas starts flowing out. But what I'm getting at is that most of these people speak the same way that I do, and actually some of them write the same way. But that doesn't make them dumb.

Maybe I'm getting off topic a little too much.

I'll tell you what is dumb is kids that think using the word n---- is cool. I play XBox Live alot, and you should hear some of the kids on there. N---- this and n---- that and did you see that n---- jump and get that n-----! and so on. THAT is a sign of unintelligence. Well, apparently unintelligence is not a word because it keeps underlining it in red and it doesn't have a word to replace it with. Oh well, yall understand what I mean.

I agree lemming, some of the stuff these kids use is off the wall! The one that gets me is 'pimpin'! I hate that and think it's vulgar. My 16 year old son doesn't talk like that, but his 31 year old brother does!
