I had one come off on my old 392 hemi. The pulley was bigger than the balancer ring so it didn't go anywhere, it just rattled around between the hub and the pulley. The 392 is internally balanced so the only way I new something had happened was from the noise it was making. I also had a balancer ring turn on the hub on a Ford pickup I used to own. I shut it off one evening and I guess it turned when the engine stopped, because when I started it up the next morning it had a bad vibration. You could never tell by looking at it that it had moved though, it looked normal!
