steering wheel mounting nut

I feel dumb for asking....But cannot seem to locate a steering wheel mounting nut...the one that mounts the crush can to the steering shaft....

Anyone know what size it is? Was thinking I would just use a regular nut if I could get the size...

Well,I found a couple of 1/2-fine (20) nuts.....

However, seems that the top of the shaft is a little mushroomed over.....I have a thread chaser die and a thread file and thought I was making a little progress but no joy.....the die doesnt seem to want to start  ......

Afraid to get too aggressive and really louse up the shaft.....

Any words of wisdom on this?

Be sure to use a LOCK NUT, not just a standard non locking nut. If you use a non locking nut, your canister may come loose and chances are, it won't be while it's sitting in the garage.

Your steering wheel shaft is mushroomed probably from being hit with something. If it's not too severe, you can grind the top off of the shaft until you can get the nut started. You will have to keep the end square and be careful not to grind too much. Good luck.

Thanks...yeah, I guess that's what I will try......Was going to, but wasnt sure how much "extra" there was to play with......I thought if there was some magical alternative I could try I would...LOL 

I bought a nyon lock nut I plan to use, though it seems like it may be a bit deep....wont know till I try it....

I guess with a 38 year old car that has been touched by who knows who, I best be getting used to this sort of thing eh?

I know my rear end universal joint yoke has a broken bolt in it which I am sure will be fun......I wonder what other surprises await?  LOL
