MSD Replacing
« on: April 06, 2009 - 06:51:53 PM »
Hi,
I found a MSD 6AL ignition box on my Challenger when I bought it.  The engine starts very well and I have a good throttle response anytime.
But I would like to give a more stock looking to my engine bay.  So I'm going to replace the MSD with a Mopar orange box.

My question is:  is it worth doing it ?   What are pro and cons ?

I know that one of the main advantages of MSD is to produce 2-3 sparks at once at low rpms.   Do you think that with Mopar orange box ingition I will loose in terms of drivablity ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In my experience as long as all the ign components are in top condition you will lose nothing , some engine do start & idle better with multi spark so you may notice a small difference below 3000 RPM

Always remember the simple rule to making more HP. You can either make BIGGER bangs in the cylinder, be it with more spark & fuel and/or more air, or more of them. Doing anything to lessen any of those will likely sacrifice some level of power, wheather it is really noticeable or not.

my concern is not to loose maximum power but to loose torque at low rpms.

I use the car only for cruising and I love the actual drivability and the throttle response at low speed.

What is your motor.  If it's a big block, you've got 400+ ft-lbs as it is.  Even a small block is 300+, and that's with the stock setup, so how much do you really need (stupid question, I know)?  Most likely you're not going to notice any loss, plus you've got the headache-in-waiting of the MSD box crapping out on you out of the car.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I've had a few of the Chrysler boxes crap out on me, including a chrome box that had very little use, so they aren't exactly beyond failing either. :dunno: It's not exactly a major operation converting it if it ever fails. I think 3 wires?

Never found my msd as a headache. I have super fast startups when i turn the key, cleaned up the idle some as well. I paid $50 for my 6a. Love it. If i were to buy another box, it'd be a digital instead of analog box. Keeps the multispark for all rpm since a digital box triggers faster.  :grinyes:

It seems that they can be really hit or miss.  Myself and a friend went through 4 of them between the 2 of us in a 2 year period.  Might have been a bad batch, but when you have failures like that, for me personally, I will never touch one again.

You can mount them about anywhere, but I wouldn't get too close to anything so they have a little room to dissipate the heat.

I don't mean to butt in but how much better is the MSD from the stock electronic ign. on a 318?
