What should I expect from my body guy?
« on: April 08, 2009 - 12:59:17 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to take my 70 Challenger in for "TA Clone" body work and I want to know what expectations I should have of the shop that's doing the work:

1) I have a used TA Hood (not sure if it is an early repop or possibly even home made job).  Just lying it over the engine bay, it doesn't fit well (gap between fenders & hood) and the body guy told me the solution would likely be to add fiberglass to the sides of the hood as opposed to moving the fenders around.  Does that sound right?

2) They will need to remove the fender turn signals, antenna & emblems then fill and repaint the fenders.  Can I expect there won't be any noticeable difference in the color of the fenders as compared to the rest of the car in both shade & direct sunlight, or am I just kidding myself?

Thanks, Charlie

IMO:
1. The OE hoods on these cars were notorious for not fitting well and "bowing" in the middle from the hood hinge springs. If the (assuming) steel hood fits nice and your T/A one doesn't then adding fiberglass I think would be the best choice. You might also consider getting a new hood from a decent fiberglass place. It may cost you less in the long run if the painter can just scuff, prime and paint as opposed to building up the fiberglass on the current hood to fit the car. If your current hood is a factory hood, you could sell it to someone doing a restoration to help offset the cost of a new hood since you are building a clone.
2. What color is your car? Is it metallic? Is the current paint job relatively new? Hopefully, if the car was repainted, you have a sample of the paint used or the brand. It is going to be tough to match up just the fenders (if they paint the whole fender) to an existing paintjob unless the painter does a "blend" (transition) into the door area. Metallics are the worst to match up. If possible, maybe they can paint just the tops of the fenders since that is where the repairs will be made since there isn't really much area right next to it that you can see in the same "light" from the same angle/plane, just the top of the door which is a pretty small area.

Hey thanks for the input.  With that said I think:

1) I'll let my body guy make the call as to working with the TA hood I have or if I would be better off getting a new hood.  Considering the TA repop hoods cost roughly $700 plus maybe $150 shipping--- I sure hope the one I have will work & be cost effective.

2) That's a good idea to have the antenna & turn signal holes filled and  paint just the top of the fenders (plum crazy metalic purple) as opposed to the whole fenders.  One body guy didn't want to go that route because it would result in paint lines at the front of the fenders, but I'm thinking it would be easier to overcome a small paint line than an unsightly metalic paint panel difference when looking at the side of the car.  He could fill any holes resulting from removing the side Challenger & V8 emblems and spot touch up paint them before covering with the 340 Six Pack decals.

Again, thanks for your input.

I ended up replacing my year one AAR hood with one from AAR quality fiberglass because it was going to be cheaper than fixing the one I had. Hope it goes well for you.
