Valve cover breather

What should the black valve cover breather look like inside?
I have just removed mine and it seems to be pretty thick with oil. Is this correct or should it be fairly clean inside?
Can they be cleaned out?
Thanks
Steve

Needs 2 be cleaned out. I used carb cleaner to clean mine. Had to repeat the process a few times
