Quick Pistol Grip Question

I just picked up a pretty nice 70 Challenger. Its a 4 speed car and has a Hurst T/Hammer Shifter with a seperate red reverse lock out lever. My question is, does anyone know if I can just swap out the shifter for any E body shifter, like the ones on E-bay, or will I have to get an all new shifter mechanism, shifter rods etc?

Tried searching a little but alot of other stuff came up that didnt help me any.

I am not familiar with the Hurst shifter you have now so I can`t say if you can just swap the shifter unit & handle , you may or may not need new rods though

I acquired a Hurst shifter several years ago that was like the one in your car. It had an e body pistol grip lever on it, the one that bolts on with two bolts, not the first style that slips in and locks.

That shifter and mounting plate is for a b-body. B-bodies had the shifter mounted mid-trans instead of toward the rear like an e-body and  have the terrible long shift handle with a long throw.  That shifter was Hurst's answer for racing, move the shifter back and use a short stick.

Im sorry, could you elaborate a little more on your reply,. Im confused. Keep in mind, im totally new to this hobby of ours so if you could put it in simple terms it would mean alot.
Are you saying: That the shifter and mounting plate that I currently have one my challenger is from a B-Body or were you talking about the Ebay add I linked?

Do you know if I have to get a new mechanism and rods/linkages for the pistol grip setup? The only reason I ask, is because this red lever currently on my tranny is really confusing me.

I don't think you can transfer a 70 slip in pistol grip handle into that shifter. You would be better off just biting the bullet and getting what you need. Also, after market shifter bars seem to bend easier than originals, or some aftermarket ones anyways.  Search around for some deals on a correct shifter. Hurst has rebuilt originals they sell. In the long run, you'll be happier.

I was refering to the ebay link.  If yours only has the additional red 'reverse lock out' handle (only moves up and down) it is probably a Hurst Comp III shifter.  A bolt on pistol grip handle will work with this set up.  Your shifter and rods will work fine.

Awsome, thank you. I sure hope your right. Let me dig around a little more now that I have this information.
