Clock needs work?

I have a 70 Cuda with the rally gauges.  If I don't drive the car for a while the clock is not running.  If I reset the clock with the knob it will run for a little while (less than a minute) but then stops.  If I move the knob again, I can get it to work again for a while.  Seems like the more I drive the car and fiddle with the clock it will run a little longer?  Is there anything I can try myself to lube the clock works to get it to run or is this something to leave to an expert?   ???

Most people(me) have the clock sent out for a quartz conversion. Others have done it themselves, but I can't speak of how tough that is to do. The problem as I see it, is the clock is totally sealed from behind, so I'm not sure how you would get in there to lube it.   :clueless:

Now that you mention it, I recall removing the unit many years ago and as you say it was a solid housing on the back. 
Can you provide a source for the quartz conversion?

I had the same problem but for whatever reason it mysteriously started working again. If you do a search you'll find some suggestions on cleaning and lubing your clock that might solve your problem.

there are small rivets in the face of the clock that need to be removed to remove the can , the conversion comes with new rivets

Can I purchase just the rivets if I want to try and remove the can for inspection and cleaning and then put it back on later?

When I did the electronic conversion I got pi$$ed off trying to install those teeny little rivets. So.... I used small pop rivets and painted them flat black. You have to be real close to tell the difference as the paint fills the pop hole.

Maybe I could just drip a small whole in the back of the can and fill it with syn oil?

I meant do a search on this fourm. A couple of guys have done it and had good success. I was going to do the quartz conversion but I'm kind of weird and like the "tick, tick" of the original clock that you lose when you convert it. :2thumbs:

The clock has points that touch each other when the spring winds down, which completes the circuit and wind the spring back up. That is the snapping sound that you hear when the clock is running. If you get in there, you have to file the points clean to get them to work again.

I have installed the quartz kit on a friends car. I never did it for my 3 clusters because I disconnect my batteries everytime I put my car away.  Working or not, I don't want to adjust the clock everytime that I drive my car

Appreciate all the help.  I did a search as recommended and found the previous discussions.  I also disconnect by battery when I know the car will be idle for extended periods.
 
I did notice the other day when I drove the car, and it was a hot day, that the clock ran the whole time I had the car out and a few hours after I got back.  I believe a little spray  cleaner and lube is probably all it needs.

Also, maybe a 416 stroker motor and a little more aggressive driving would kick that clock into action!   :grinno:
