What are D4 hemi heads??  :dunno: Pardon me if this is a  :eek7: question...

They were the Aluminum race heads from back in the 70's that Bob Mullen designed. They take special Intakes and possibly other special parts so be careful about buying them.
Once we had Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope & Johnny Cash. Now we have Obama, No Hope and No Cash!

Thanks for the quick reply!!!  :2thumbs:  I gotta line on a bunch of parts (HEMI) and these are among them. I knew it was some racing something or another..

Mullen also designed the W-2 heads that got banned from Nascar and won the ProStock championship for Glidden, so he knows what he's doing. :grinyes:

Here are a couple of links with some interesting info on them. It looks like the D4 cast iron head was for nascar and the D4a was aluminum and for dragracing. Also looks like they were built in 69-70 and when they tested them on a 426 hemi they put out 641 hp. Sounds like a good head to me.

 I'd say they are worth eleventy billion dollars (guess the reference  :rofl: ) Seriously though I don't know what they are worth but definitely appear to be a quality part to have.

One of those guys that runs the Nostalgia SS class would probably be the best bet for a buyer, or even a current NHRA racer if they are legal to run and they are good castings. Are yours Iron or Aluminum?

This is a bunch of stuff from a race team gone by.. I should know more later tonite. supposedly a block/bunch of heads/ pistons/ rods/ cams/ ect.. who knows?? There was talk of some of this stuff being alchol ...

I had a set of Hemi heads a few years back stamped "MULLEN & CO." They were from a windowed alcohol motor.

This is the first I've heard who Mullen was despite queries on Mofarts and others. (back in 2004-2005)

Now that I know more, I'm certain that I gave these away.  :eek4: (Sorry for the semi-hijack)

Bob Mullen is synonomous with Chrysler racing in the 70's when they owned every record. As much so as Tom Hoover was. He was one of the first to use a flow bench and his specialty was cylinder heads. Every small block racing head in exsistence now resembles the W-2 that he designed in the Mid 70's. It was good enough (with some Bob Glidden porting) to have low ET and top MPH in every Pro Stock race in 1978 using a motor that had never been competitive in the class before, after just a winter of development work when Glidden switched brands. It also still holds the point differential record in Nascar from when Petty used them and had the biggest points lead in NASCAR history at the end of the season. Both NHRA and NASCAR changed the rules to eliminate thier use, but the damage was done. The old 1st gen W-2 heads might not look like much now compared to the newer incarnations with the better chambers, but when they came out they were no doubt the best heads you could get for a small block after porting, and they had a factory part # :grinyes:

Yup... one book I have has a pic of him from the mid 70s witha  set of big block heads that were oval port with D exhaust. They were working on a set of BB W2 style heads at the time.
