Fuel out the horn?
« on: October 18, 2009 - 02:03:52 PM »
All of a sudden my engine started flooding out.  I had to keep goosing it at idle to get it home.  Fuel was dumping into the carb after I shut it off. I have an old mallory fuel pump that doesnt require a regulator.  Took the bowl off and the float was empty but the bowl was full.  Checked the needle valve and it didn't seem to have any crud on it.  Put it back together and now the bowl fills up and fuel starts pumping out the horn on the primaries, Carb is an almost brand new Holley 750 DP.  Anything sound familiar to anyone.

Have you tried lowering the float? If that doesn't work, my best guess is too much fuel pressure.

Also, I had a carb that had a good float, needle was clean, but the float could move side to side a little bit, just enough that the tang to push the needle closed would NOT close the needle all the way.
I just squeezed the float arms so it would not move side to side and that took care of it.

Took the needle out and blew it out and put it back in and now it works fine.  My best guess is I had the assembly screwed to far in after the first time I put it back together and cocked the needle so it wouldn't seat.  Not sure what was wrong to begin with.  Probably something on the needle or seat I didn't see.

Do yourself a favor and check for gas in the oil before you drive it too much. :2cents:

often just rapping on the screw will shake out a piece of dirt or get the needle seated properly again without disassembling
you may want to insatll a new fuel filter though
