dual ballast question
« on: March 28, 2009 - 09:37:07 PM »
am working on getting the ignition in my 72 fish reconnected.72 body, 74 318 engine....

I got the Bill Evans engine harness for electronic ignition and it has two 2-spade connectors for the ballast.

My car had a single ballast so I went to my local Pep Boys and bought a new dual unit.

Couple issues:

First, I finally found the "CORRECT" wiring diagram in the CD manual I got for the 72. The diagram on mymopar.com doesnt show the dualballast.....

Can someone look at this picture and double check me? Look right to you?

Next, the manual says the main ballast is supposed to measure .5-.6 ohm.....this one (brand new) measures 1.6.

Auxilliary supposed to be 4.75-5.75....it reads at 5.7

Did I get a bad or incorrect ballast? Temp in the garage is about 60.

it is connected correctly
the high resistance may drop as it heats up but seems to high to me , the green / red wire will do nothing as the new ECUs have eliminated the 5th pin at the plug

Do you think it will hurt anything to try it as-is?

I was told this was their last one.....otherwise would go back and check another...

Its a borg-warner part #RUE1

should be OK , your spark could be on the weaker side though retest the ballast after using it

I see they list it as 1.2 ohm there.....

Hmmm.

After checking a few at the store, they all read around the same 1.2

On that basis it's only working as a single ballast anyway.
