u joint c clip
« on: May 02, 2009 - 02:50:44 AM »
Ok, here's a real newbie question......   :screwy:

The c-clips that are used to hold the caps in the u-joints ----  do new ones come with u-joints when ya buy em?

If not, how hard are they to get?

I pressed the old u joints out of the driveshaft I just bought and found that the one cap was missing its clip.

Also, I pressed out the old joints but am worried that pressing the new ones in could be more difficult to do without damaging the new ones.....any tricks?  I am using the old vice-and-a-couple-of-sockets method....lol

Thanks all....

If you do try to scrounge up a clip make sure it is the same thickness as the others in the new joint.  Different manufactures have different clips.

I used my press once to install u-joints, wasn’t worth the effort.  Using the vice/sockets/hammer method ever since.

I still use the vise and sockets method too. Since you haven't put the u-joint in yet, take it back to the store you got it from and tell them it was short a clip. Chances are good they'll swap it for another one or give you a clip. Another option is to reuse one of the clips from the old u-joint if it's in good shape.

My good ole local Ace Hardware store (boy do I miss it), had a huge hardware section with a selection of C-clips.... My cousin lost a clip for his Jeep 4WD front axle & they had it.

hey folks

the sitiation was that I had lost an original clip, but hadnt yet bought the new u joints.......

i ended up at Napa and they pressed in the new ones for me...they came with clips.

A little miffed, though......though they installed two of the same part numbers, (super duty greasable 256 I think), one had the zerk-style of lube fitting in the middle of thejoint and the other has a "needlepoint tip" style, on the end......they didnt have two of the same.....and even if they had they didnt realize it till they were installed.

So i had to buy an adaptor for my grease gun.....also means that this will be the odd zerk on the whole car.... :swear:

I think NAPA is slipping.....used to be top nothc parts etc,..,.,.last time I bought new brake rotors for acar, they had the exact same part numbers but different rotors...........

Anyways, the ujoints ar done and I just need to paint the shaft and then hook her up....ofcourse I need the tranny rebuilt for that...LOL

Talk about the cart before the horse....

We went thru their rack of nipples...(hey that sounds kinky).......all the standard nipples were too large .......

I guess that for as often as I will need to lube the thing it will be fine....it was just an annoying situation.....I dropped the shaft off for almost 3 hours......when I came back for it , it STILL wasnt done.....the guy told me that I hadnt told him which end matched up with the tranny yoke......but I had told the other guy I dropped it off with....LOL

Like I said, no real harm.....just annoying.   :violin:
