Someone posted this in the past and I saved it. I hope it helps. You should be able to get generic relays locally. I have even seen them at Walmart.

You need two relays. One for the low beams, and one for the high. The hi beam wires run to all the bulbs.

If you have fog lights and want them to turn off when you turn on the brights, you'll need three relays.  I have done this on a '71 and can dig out the diagrams.

i would appreciatte it! driving this thing at night is scary! i had roadlamps but sold them. i am going to bypass the ammeter as well going to cut and splice the wires on the engine side of the bulkhead. to try and get more juice to the battery and eliminate a fire hazard as well. only thing extra i run is a msd and a cd player no amp or anything.

would these work even though they are five wire? whats the fifth wire for?

The 5th wire on automotive relays is for the normally closed (NC) contact. Using this Ebay setup would be a good price $7.99 for 2 relays and their sockets. I would order more that one because a pair of relays have unlimited uses for alarm systems and controlling add-ons.

You don't need to cut any wires to do the upgrade.  Use the existing headlight wiring for the "trigger" wires.  You are still taking the substantial load off of the headlight switch. :2cents:

The ammeter bypass can be done many ways.  I ended up cleaning all the original connections and adding a piece of #8 from the Alt to the Starter relay in parallel to the existing wiring(#10) this leaves all the factory stuff intact but allows an easier path to the battery for the power to flow.  The ammeter doesn't work properly anymore, but I added a Voltmeter to keep an eye on things.

i am going to use the existing headlight wires but i will have to cut wires and splice the relay into the factory headlight wires the only new wires i will need is a 12v feed wire and a ground. i can't wait! going to go junkyard hunting for a denso alternator like goody has simply for the boost in amps at an idle. then i will run a new wire straight to the starter relay and cut the ammeter wire completely out of the picture.

Previous discussion on this was in this thread...

May be able to add the two together to get what you need.
