Tuff wheel on a '70?
« on: May 01, 2009 - 08:13:24 PM »
I understand the tuff wheel option (which I think looks great) wasnt available on the '70, but I'm sure it will fit. Is the standard 3 spoke a little larger? And since I havent driven one, does the tuff wheel set closer to the dash (further from the driver) or does it use the same size crush can? The real ones are expensive. Are the knockoffs noticably inferior?
Thanks.

Tuff wheels never came on an E-body.  If you want it to fit, you will need to find a car tuff wheel adapter.  The tuff adapter does put it a little closer to the dash, but not much.

I just bought a old grant faximile and drilled it for the standard e-body crush can.

It will bolt onto the standard e body crush can. I have installed them on a couple of e bodies. Here are a couple pictures of it installed in my 71 cuda using the stock crush can.

order the grant wheel from summit racing, you can drill it to fit in about 20-30 min. using the original as a template......easy swap

Is the standard 3 spoke a little larger? Yes, Tuff wheel about 15" and standard wheel 16" dia.

And since I havent driven one, does the tuff wheel set closer to the dash (further from the driver) or does it use the same size crush can? Same distance to the dash and uses the same crush can if you use one of the good quality copies of the Tuff wheel

The real ones are expensive. Are the knockoffs noticably inferior? Depends on which one you get. Some are better copies than others. Contact Mike Ross at www.beaparts.com 330-725-3990 for one of the good ones.

Thanks. You're welcome :horse:

I got a bare original Tuff wheel for my Duster from a friend. Somebody cut the little black 'tabs' off. So I'll probally end up buying a new repro Grant one and using the other for rolling my Coronet around the shop.

Grant makes a new one that fits w/o any adapter/drilling.  I have it.  It's a little larger than the OEM tuff, and the grip isn't as thick, but it looks and feels good for less than $100.00.

PGCLASSIC/BEA makes a leather one for more than 2x the above.  I don't know the diamter though, but I'll probably pick it up too someday; just like the feel of leather more.
