I doubt seriously that this will help US auto manufacturers. If the idea is to get people to buy more fuel efficient vehicles, and all they get is $4500, I bet most people would turn to Kia, Scion, and Honda, which all sell cheaper then Domestic "Fuel Efficient" vehicles. Besides, with the threat of the Big Three going under, people will probably have more confidence in foreign vehicles anyway. So in my opinion I think all this will do is help foreign companies.
