Rev Limiter?
« on: May 06, 2009 - 07:21:21 PM »
Are there any companies that make a rev limiter for old motors? I would like to have one for those accidental downshifts, today I accidentally hit 6k, and I don't want a blown motor.

Are you talking about an MSD system (6A, 6AL, or 7AL I believe), or something that is less obvious (and won't crap out on you 50 miles from home)?

And where do you guys think I should set it? I have a 273, don't know the internal specifics. I'm thinking around 5k, seeing as it is a last step precaution. Maybe 5.5, but probably closer to 5

MSD has a Soft touch stand alone rev control without replacing the whole ign system if that helps 5500 should be fine or low side depending on the valve springs

Yeah 5500 sounds like a good number to me, it can still rev, but not too high. This motor does like to rev, but its not a weekend driver that can break without it being the end of the world.

Maybe I installed it wrong but the Soft touch in mine wouldn't slow the engine when using the 4000 RPM plugin. I have the 6000 in place now but hesitate to really test it.

It is connected and no electrical mishaps in 3 years though. :2cents:

I have used them in 3-4 cars with no issue But the big problem is the retarded chips MSD sells , fist you have to buy 5 not the 1 you need & second the chips are commonly mismarked , I was dynoing a car last fall with a 6200 chip in it & it would kill off at 5200 everytime , I pulled the chip & she ran clean past 6200 immediatly

I  decided to put my  :poopoke: and bought the Summit racing electronic ignition box which has also an adjustable rev limiter. (SUM-850600) I got it on sale 139$ or so while the price now seems to be 169.95. I was looking for using orange box with pertronix indepent rev limiter but the price for the rev limiter was almost the same as for the whole summit ignition box. So I went with the whole box.

There haven't been many reviews for the summit box on the net but those few I have found have given it a pretty good score. The box is made by mallory and only the casing has been changed to one with summit logos.

I will probably get the box tested during this summer and I will post some feedback here if it is crap.

I have used the Mallory boxes , they work great & at least they have dials instead of chips to control the rev limit

I think your playing it too safe. Those 273-318-340 motors are short stroke and can rev up with less stress on the rods and cranks than the 360's.

My 318 revs to 6500 (have an MSD tach that shows the highest RPM I hit each time I start the car. I see 6000 or more all the time.

I do have a rev limiter thou ste at about 6800, an MSD E Cruve dist that has a dial to turn.

I agree those MSD chips are never right, always seem  set to low.

My Mallory digital 6AL (similar number to MSD) has two dials to select what limits you want. no extra charge.

Well, I don't need it that high. Its making max power between 3k and 4500, so there's no reason to rev much higher. It shifts at 5k at full throttle, so 5,500 seems reasonable. This is just a "mild" daily driver motor  I want to be on the safer side because, at this point, its my only car I can take to school  :burnout:
