Well, that was an interesting weekend....(update: 5/6/09)
« on: March 30, 2009 - 02:05:48 PM »
Decided to go over to a car swap meet this weekend in Vancouver. Yesterday morning, me and my dad were on our way to the show in his '90 Mustang LX 5.0. We came off the highway and went around a sharp corner. My dad went to down shift and the car all of a sudden kicked out and spun right towards a steel lamp post. My dad tried to stop it and almost got it under control. Unfortentley not enough. The passenger's side front wheel caught the concrete base of the post and my side of the car slammed into the post and then caused us the spin 180'. The accident caved in my door skin and the front part of the quarter panel. It destroyed both wheels and tires on my side and the right side front suspension. It broke the balljoint and all of that assembly. Thank god my dad did what he did, the way we were slidding, the car was going straight towards it head-on but he managed to side swipe it. If that concrete base wouldn't of been there, we wouldn't of hit anything and just barely missed the pole. It all happened so fast, all I remember is spinning and then sitting there with my side of the car sitting low on the ground. My dad asked if I was alright and then we both got out of the car. Both of us are fine. I'm pretty sore and my dad's knee is swollen but otherwise, we're fine. The lamp post got bent and the light on top broke off. I remember the sound of the car hitting the post but I didn't see anything, I was looking the other way trying to brace for impact. I saw it coming. I still can't believe what happened. The car looks fixable. It needs a new door, a new panel on the front part of the quarter, two wheels and some new parts on the passenger's side front suspension. The impact didn't cause the air bag to go off...it wasn't hard enough of a hit. The only broken glass was on the mirror and on my side, the windshield had a small crack in the bottom.  On a brighter note, me and my dad ended up making it to the swap meet. I got a NOS Plymouth keychain, some 1973 BC licence plates and a '93 Mustang model kit (thought I'd build him a model of the car haha). So, just a note to you guys....if you see fog in the area, assume the road is wet because when you realize it, it might be too late.

Here's a sketch of what happened. I'm trying to remember everything. It happened so fast.

Yup fog can make roads pretty slick. Glad to hear you're both O.K.

Last week-end, on the way to the city doing 70 on the freeway. I could feel my fronts starting to slip around. I got out of that lane quick and so was everyone else behind me.

Well, we'll see how ICBC handles it. So far, they've been nothing but dicks.

They dropped the car off at my dads. Get this, the passenger front fender is beat to living ****...when they took the car from the accident scene, it was MINT. The roof has a dent in it...that was also mint. Hatchback won't line up, that was fine. Engine compartment....firewall and inner fender, welds are ripped apperentley, that was also FINE! We don't have what the f*ck the insurance company did to it but we are not happy at all.  :stomp:

Consumers' Association National Study On Auto Insurance Rates Confirms Toronto Consumers Pay The Highest Rates In Canada

TORONTO, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - "Auto insurance rates in Toronto are the highest in Canada and are outrageously high compared to other major cities such as Vancouver and Montreal", said Mr. Mel Fruitman, President of the Consumers' Association of Canada at a news conference held at 10 am today at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto. The Association released its national study of auto insurance rates across Canada including data from forty cities in all ten provinces.

"This study by the CAC is the largest independent national study of auto insurance rates ever conducted", said Mr. Bruce Cran, National Secretary of the Consumers Association. "The study used over 7,000 actual rate quotes, and asked the question consumers want answered, namely, 'How much would the same driver pay for auto insurance if they had the same vehicle, same driving record and same claims history but lived in each of the 40 cities surveyed in this study?' "Our report delivers the answer", said Mr. Cran.

The study may be downloaded from the reports section at www.CACBC.com. As of 10:00 am Sept 10th.

The major finding in the study is that consumers in the four provinces with public auto insurance, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec pay the lowest rates. "Some consumers in Toronto pay up to 500% more for auto insurance than do equivalent consumers in provinces with public auto systems", said Mr. Cran. "The highest actual rate quote we obtained in all of Canada was a shocking $18,000 in Toronto".

"When one also compares Ontario's smaller cities to smaller cities in a province like British Columbia one thing is very clear" said Mr. Cran. "Consumers in cities like Ottawa, London, Thunder Bay and Barrie pay a lot more. How much more they pay is also dependent on how much comparison shopping they do. The rates from different private insurers can vary by thousands of dollars. We strongly recommend consumers shop around".

The study shows that, of Canada's large cities, Vancouver and Winnipeg have much lower rates than Toronto and Calgary. Winnipeg has the lowest rates of major cities in Canada. On a region vs. region basis the maritime provinces have much higher rates than do the western provinces, with the exception of Alberta, whose rates are much higher," said Mr. Cran.

There is one unique location in Canada that enables a side-by-side comparison of public vs. private auto insurance rates. This is Lloydminster, Alberta vs. Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, a city that straddles the border between provinces. "A person living 30 metres across the street on the Alberta side can pay up to $5000 more each year for the same vehicle and get worse insurance coverage", said Mr. Cran. Saskatchewan has a public auto system while Alberta has a totally private system.

"Should a young driver with a clean driving record have to pay 100% more to drive a ten year old car compared to a middle aged driver who owns a high priced BMW and has driving convictions? That's the case in Ontario", said Mr. Cran. In the public auto insurance provinces, if you are a bad driver you pay more, irrespective of your age.
