*%$#@ crappy China parts!
« on: May 10, 2009 - 06:21:04 AM »
OK, so I place an order with Summit for a few things for the Duster one of them being a Mopar oil dipstick and tube. When I open it I immediately can tell it just "feels" cheap but I try to install it anyway.First problem is it is too big to fit in the hole in the block but I figure it`s just the chrome plating and I need to grind it off-no big deal. Then I see it`s hitting the fuel pump block off plate slightly so it needs to be bent a little so I tweak it with my tubing bender.I trial fit it and it needs a little more so I put it back in the bender and SNAP it breaks in two!Now this was done correctly in the right size bender and was only about 30 degrees so it never should of broke but the piece of China crap must be made of pot metal or something not regular carbon steel.Of course the tube went in the trash and I ended up modifying the van style I had by shortening it and using the new dipstick and I`m out ~ $18.I could understand if this was a Mr Gasket or other cheapo brand but I guess I expected better quality form Mopar.  :swear:

I feel your pain, I just replaced my brakelight stop switch after replacing it only six months ago (on my Explorer). I opted for the better quality (supposed to be anyway) Napa switch. I get the box and on the side it says, "Made in Taiwan"!!! :smilielol:We need to bring manufacturing back to America!!! :clapping:

Might not have anything to do with where it was made. Steel can become brittle when it's chrome plated. I've had bolts returned to me from the chrome shop with the wire still wrapped around them that the chromer used to hold them while suspended in the plating tanks. Usually the wire would break when I tried to unwind it form the bolts because it had gotten brittle from the process.

I`ve dealt with plenty of chrome parts before with no problems.Like I said I could tell as soon as I opened the package and felt it in my hand is was just plain cheasy.I probably won`t use the dip stick either as I would be afraid it will break off and fall inside the pan.I`ll just shorten the van one to the correct length and make a couple marks on it for the level.

Kinda off topic but all racing series have rules against plating suspension parts because they soften up after plating . this is a well known fact in car circles and chrome shows equel bias to all platers regardless of origin .that said the fit from china sucks . p.s. im sure some clown will chime in that they chromed a part that never broke and that makes it ok but its not . think about what you guys plate with safety first . :2cents:

Jeff, I may have a stock SB dipstick and tube kicking around if you need it.
