Fuel Gauge Gremlin
« on: May 06, 2009 - 02:00:38 PM »
My second post and another gauge issue. My '73 Challenger with rallye cluster that was redone by AutoInstruments  :) has a RTE Solid State Limiter  seems to have a fuel gauge issue. When I first juiced the cluster the fuel gauge seemed to read low but I was working on other things and put it down lower on my to do list. The gauge then seemed to start working and read correctly after the first fillup. Then I noticed a guage blip that made the gauge read about 1/4 lower than I thought it should. It sat for about 30 secs and return to the higher reading. This occurs regularly but not on any pattern that I can see. I have a new sending unit and ground strap. Any ideas on where to check or any checks I may have missed?  Thanks :dunno:

Your voltage limiter is also linked to the oil pressure and temp. gauges. So if the limiter was at fault, all three would be going crazy at the same time.

I suspect it's your sending unit. I know many people have had problems with the aftermarket units not reading correctly, but this is the first I have heard about one jumping around.

The other gauges are working correctly or at least consistently with no erractic behavior. I didn't think it was in the limiter but I needed a second opinion. Is their a good, in car test for the sending unit?

The only test I know is with a volt-ohm meter. I do not know what the reading should be, but others on this board do.

This is probley due to the fact that the new limiter gives you a steady 5 volts- so any float level change in the tank will reflect it faster than the old limiter as it was a pulsed voltage.  if the the other gauges are reading normal when it does this then the limiter is ok- the float is just bouncing around and maybe not setup right in the tank!

Is it an aftermarket sending unit?  If so, you might need to pull it out and bend it a bit so the bottom doesn't hit on the bottom of the tank.  I had to do that with mine.  You probably need to pull it anyways, because it sounds like something is rubbing or catching on the float.

Thanks for all the advice!!!!I have been away and have not been back to the board until today. I will look into some of the ideas as soon as I burn a little fuel. :burnout:

You state you have a new ground strap but what you describe is classic symptom of poor ground.
Double check that, maybe add a second ground & see what happens.
