HI TORQUE STARTER MOTOR.

 Hi,
     Just recently i was having trouble with my original mopar starter motor. It would either work ok or just spin without turning the engine.
       So i bought the smaller, lighter, faster hi torque starter (new) and fitted that expecting an end to my problems !

   Not so im afraid...............the new one does the same sort of thing,but not all the time.Never seems to do it with cold engine, strangely.

   I have checked all my connections and ground wires etc.  A new starter relay didnt solve the problem either.
 
   So now i am wondering if it is the ignition switch itself that is my problem ?

  Anyone else had the same problem as me or similar ?

           The new one has only been on for 2 weeks,so i have contacted the guy who i bought it from.  He said just make sure

   that its nothing else before i return the starter for a new replacement.


  I have been told that mopar ignition switches go bad quite a bit ?

Not in my experience , I virtually never changed one , the relay on the inner fender is more suspect , they will fail , remove the small plate on the starter with 3 screws & take a look at the contacts in there , make sure they are clean & even height

So it spins fast but doesn't catch?

Maybe it needs a small adjustment one way or the other.  There is usually some play side to side before you tighten it down.  Maybe a shim but if the factory shield is in there it should be fine.

Duh yeah if the starter spins everyhting is working into the starter so it is either alignment or the starter itself / starter drive that is the problem

   There is no way this is the ignition switch.

A quick way to eliminate the switch is by jumping the terminals at the relay.

        Ok,  The next time the starter plays up I will put my screwdriver across the terminals on the new relay.

                Then if the starter cranks normally by doing that, it points to the ignition switch...........Right ?

I trust your judgement Mike,but the ign switch is the only thing that i haven't  replaced now.
