I’m selling my 1970 GTX because I just just pulled the trigger on a '70 Challenger R/T. I have realized I am not a body man and this GTX deserves a good body man and deserves to be finished right. Whoever buys it can drive it until you are ready to do the bodywork!
This car came with a lot of good options, including:
440
Hemi 4-speed, pistol grip
26” cooling
Dana 60 3.54 rear
Hemi suspension
Power front disc brakes
Hi-Impact FY1 yellow paint
Tic Toc Tac
Go-Wing
Hood turn signal indicators
Chrome Exhaust Tips
Bucket seats
AM/8-track with 3 speaker dash
Sport Steering Wheel
I have the data plate info and will include it here soon – just don’t have it handy here at work. It’s a Los Angeles car and was built fairly late in the year (April 1970).
Being a 4-speed it is fairly rare, 1 in 1421 if I remember correctly.
The original 440 is gone and was replaced with a ’69 440. The exhaust manifolds are off a ’69 but a correct set of ’70 manifolds go with the car.
The Dana is gone and now has an 8 ¾” (489 case) with a low gear ratio, I would guess 3.91 but I could be wrong. It's not a Sure Grip.
The car runs and drives decent. Stock cam. Converted to electronic ignition. Glass packs, medium loud. It runs rich and needs a little sorting out. However once the engine is warmed up it will start on the first twist of the key. The oil pressure is fantastic. I just recored the original 26” radiator and it runs real cool, almost too cool.
The trans shifts OK although it’s a little tough to downshift – no grinding or anything, but it doesn’t want to go into gear. I think the clutch needs adjusting.
14" Magnum wheels and P245-60R14 white letter tires with good tread. This is as good as you can get with 14" wheels. One or two tires have some scratches on the sidewall but nothing major.
I have painted the topside of the motor with correct Mopar Restoration Hemi Orange paint. I cleaned it very well before painting. However, the bottom of the motor has not been painted. I have tried to make the engine compartment look as close to stock as I could within my budget. This means it doesn’t have the absolute correct AVS carb and valve covers that could set you back $1000 - but I came as close as I could.
The interior is almost all new except for the headliner. Pistol grip shifter really sets it off. Still need to get a buddy seat.
The frame rails and floors are good. The Dutchman panel is in great shape for a B-body. The driver’s side door was replaced before I got the car. The windshield looks almost new and must have been replaced just before I bought the car. The rest of the glass is pretty good except for the driver which has some scratches in it.
The car needs the following bodywork at a minimum: trunk floor, quarters (you could probably get away with just replacing the lower quarters), rear tail panel (not the taillight panel, but the panel below it - behind the bumper) and a paint job. The front fenders are a little banged up and need massaging. A bodyman would know better than me if both can be saved - but I think they can. I do have one good front fender that goes with the car just in case.
Finally, as you will see from the pictures, the previous owner took some mind-altering drugs and installed some kind of old Buick simulated intake scoops and put them down low on the quarters to look like exhaust tips. The lower quarters are bent and rusted and need replacing anyway - so it doesn’t really matter.
Here’s just a few of the parts I bought. I’m sure I am forgetting a lot:
Rechromed front bumper
Rechromed rear bumper (not installed yet)
New Monroe front and rear shocks (drivers front shock not installed yet)
New Quanta gas tank
New Fine line carb fuel line
New water pump
New battery tray
Recored original 26” radiator
New Mopar repro Upper and lower radiator hoses
New exhaust tips (one tip not installed yet).
New engine wiring harness (uses electronic voltage regulator)
New Hi Torque mini-starter < only obvious non-stock item
“440 Super Commando” Pie pan
New alternator mounting hardware
New bucket seat foams
New Legendary front bucket and rear seat covers
New dash cap
New Palco seat backs
New glovebox cardboard
New correct molded black carpet
New Mity Mount motor mounts (passenger side not installed)
OK, now for the Not So Good stuff:
Turn signal canceler doesn’t cancel
Radio doesn’t work
Horn was going off randomly so I disconnected
Dash lights don’t work
Wipers don’t work
Rear diff leaks (Pinion seal?)
Master cylinder leaks a little
Speedo cable is noisy and needs a different gear to show correct speed. New speedo cable goes with car.
In summary, this car runs, drives, is 99% complete, and has TONS of new parts. Lots of tender care. Never been wet since the day I bought it - always kept in my garage. Now it needs a bodyman to come along and do this car correctly, and paint. In the meantime, drive it until you are ready to do the bodywork!
