Side Window Chrome
« on: June 05, 2009 - 01:53:31 PM »
My side window chrome( the chrome that go around the top of the two side windows) has some rust on the back side and I would rather not install it like that. Since there is only a small postion of the chrome showing could a guy paint the backside with rust paint?? Also do I have to have the headliner in first or is that only covered up by the interior trim???

Are you talking about the exterior trim?

Pretty sure it's stainless.  The rust is probably just transfer from the drip rail.

Wire wheel, some sort of acid...whatever you prefer.  I wire brushed all of my stainless for my glass (front, sides, rear) with a bench grinder to clean it and then mounted a couple of buffing wheels to polish it.

Be very careful if you don't have a lot of experience doing this.  If you catch the trailing edge of the trim on the wheel, you WILL have a problem.  Best case scenario, it scares the crap out of you and might bend the trim.  Worst case scenario, the wheel grabs the trim and throws it into a soft part of your body.

Keep in mind, a 6" wheel at 3450 rpm is moving at 60 mph.

Another late reply, sorry.

Bronze wool.  And light oil.  It works for removing rust from blued surfaces without damaging the bluing any more than it already is, and I've had pretty good luck with it on stainless steel also.  A light touch won't scratch the surface at all, unlike steel wool.
