Getting the Bugs out
« on: May 22, 2009 - 09:06:17 PM »
I got my 70 Challenger back from the body shop 2 weeks ago . I had to put it back together to save a few $ ( valences, bumpers, grill, lights, wipers, radio att, emblems and so on ). Well my 10 day inspection is out and I'm still working 30 years of bugs out . Everything is going pretty good  I have an inspection appointment Sunday and far as I know all that's left is to get the brake lights working .There is only 1 wire going to the switch so hopefully that all it is, I'll know tomorrow . I'm getting what sounds like a rattle under acceleration. A friend says it is a gas ping and I should back off the timing a few degrees ?

I've been having a ball snaking around the back roads breaking things in . Yesterday in about 7 miles I had 3 girls yelling at me at different locations , 1 guy tell me how good it sounded and another guy bend over backwards trying to get me to burn out .I'm already having a ball . Oh yes all of a sudden my clock started working . Life is Good .  :burnout: :burnout:

Isn't it fun?  I enjoy driving my car, without my wife, smoking.   I'm back to a teenager again.   Funny thing is, is that I hate smoking unless I'm doing something fun. Such as driving my Challenger or drinking with friends.

Back off you timing a few degrees at a time till you car stops pinging. Your pistons will thank you for it.

When listening to the rattle I considered the noise might be the belts . The belts felt plenty tight but I tried spraying belt dressing on them trying to rule that out . Didn't sound like usual belt noise . Today I tried a octane booster before changing the timing . Noise still there . Although I was reluctant I ran the RPM,s up to 3500 with the hood open and the noise WAS the belts . Even though they felt tight I cranked on them and the noise is now history . :clapping: :clapping:

Another problem I,ve been having is a small oil puddle on the garage floor by the bell housing area . Without crawling under the car I was thinking it was the rear engine seal (new rebuild). Well today when accelerating the passenger area filled with smoke so I started looking closer . How lucky can I be ? Where the hose for the oil pressure gauge goes into the back of the motor is leaking . Although I haven't fixed it yet(in the morning) it should be a easy fix . So far I am batting a 100 hope my luck continues . :woohoo:
