Black paint? top of cowl and behind the grille?
« on: February 14, 2009 - 11:12:54 PM »
Hi all

I am getting ready to paint my '70 340 A66 challenger.  The color of the car is FY1 yellow.  My question is..... is the top of the cowl (the flat area where the wiper arms are and the rubber vent covers) and behind the grille, are they painted black or the body color of the car?

Does anyone know? :dunno:

thanks
Russ

As far as I know 70 cars were the only ones that got the cowl blackout but all years got the radiator yoke blackout on most colors. TX9 and maybe darker colors like EB7 and FC8 among others did not. Keep in mind that not all 70 cars got the cowl blackout but they were supposed to. Any evidence that your car had it originally?

I did some research on this last year and that's pretty much what I came to as well.

To do it right you have to be sloppy. the cowl was supposed to have been done by masking off the fender top and then spraying, with overspray on the firewall, I just couldn't do it so I masked off the firewall too.

My '70 B5 blue Challenger has the original cowl and engine compartment paint.  It has black on the core support, behind the grill, and frame rail (under the inner fender flange), but is all blue at the cowl and vent area.
