5.7 Hemi Woes.....
« on: June 10, 2009 - 10:59:38 PM »
The good news is that I scored a 5.7 Hemi with only 13,000 miles on it.  The pick-up was supposed to be today.  The engine was complete with all wiring, etc... (The price was nice at $1,200 bucks).  Man this engine was clean...

Then, disaster struck! :pullinghair:

One of the yard hands insisted that he could load the engine without any chains and just used the forks on the fork truck.   :dupe:  My dad was picking up the motor while I was at work and had chains and everything, but the yard hand insisted that he did not have time to put chains on the engine.... :smilielol:

Man was that a mistake, about 3.5 ft up and the engine decided to take a royal dump over on the ground.  It bent one valve cover, coil pack and broke the intake cover (Not sure if damage occurred underneath on the fuel injection stuff of not). :roflsmiley:  Then, the guy proceeded to roll the engine over on the oil pan and still insisted that he had it.  My dad was thinking discount at this point.  Then, the poor soul still insisted on picking this thing up with the lift.  The forks moved apart this time and the hemi landed on the ground straight on the oil pan.  Yep, you guessed it, smashed oil pan.  At this point, my dad was so mad that he simply got my money back and left the yard.

My question is, does everyone think this motor is worth buying if they replace the bent valve cover, top intake cover and bent oil pan?  The motor landed on concrete, so I am very weary...  I have to get the aftermarket oil pan, so this should not be a problem.

Can anyone top my miserable day of cuda part scounging?

I'd like to say it'd be okay, but that's one heck of a gamble to take.  Even if nothing else cracked or broke, that is one big shock transmitted through the engine, twice.  I'd be really leary about the block getting distorted from it.

Let it pass. Way too many hemis out there to take a chance on one that has been dropped a few times.

Chryco, the 3rd gen. hemis have cast iron blocks and alloy heads. I still wouldn't take the engine after being dropped like that though.

I just scored another hemi today for $800.00 and it is running.  After putting the hemi in my dad's challenger, this is the only way to go on the cuda build.   :clapping:

Anybody need a fresh 440 that is 30 over with steel crank and 6 pack pistons?
I also have a new 6 pack intake and comp cams pro magnum rocker arms.

$800 is more like it. Glad it is back on course. Keep us posted on the install progress.
I have an A-body 3G Hemi project myself.
