helpppppppppp!!!!!!!! tuneing issues
« on: June 10, 2009 - 10:56:46 PM »
o.k, i had this thing perculating as good as it could last year and now BLAH!!
i'm running a 340 and recently had some eddie heads and a lumpier hughes cam, i don't remember the exact cam #'s but somewhere like this 543@50 and 548@50 and i think in the 260 duration range but i would have to double check these #'s.
i have a 670 street avenger and after driving on the highway i pulled the plugs and they were white, white , white so we went up 3 size, no change in colour so we went up another 3 and still no change finally got mad and went up 6 sizes and got it to run ''blubury'' and got some dark brown and black on plugs. i also can't run any timing, i'm down to 13 initial and 30 total and this thing rattles like it has marbles in it [mostly under 4000 rpm] i just fueled up and i'm starting to suspect bad gas. i know bad gas will make it detonate but will it make plugs white? anytime ive seen where a carb is that far out it's another issue. is there something else i can check before siphoning my tank, what could i be overlooking. sorry for the long winded message, i have more info if needed, 10.5 compression, running 7 in-hg.

I had to go 6 jet sizes on the primaries and 10 on the secondaries with my Speed demon 750 to get the EGT's right on the engine dyno with my 416 so 6-10 jet sizes wouldn't surprise me with a Holley. There seems to be lots of bad gas out there nowadays so a bad load wouldn't suirprise me at all.

Edelbrock and others sell fuel mixture O2 sensor.  I have used the edel product, it worked very well to tune every circuit in the carb.
I happen to use it to tune an Edel carb, but would work for any carb.

I have seen small block run white plugs & run rich  , you really Need an exhaust sensor to dial it in , you should be able to feel whenthe engine picks up power / response with increased jetting , once it stops improving you are close

well after a bunch of head scratching i figured it out. this thing ran better every time i retarded the timing. the guy that set the timing was useing the wrong mark on the flywheel  and when i set my light on it i was getting normal readings but on the wrong mark so it was set unbelievabely advanced. i honesty don't know how i didn't blow the heads off. i knew something wasn't right but got it figured.

Another tuning method is if you pull the plugs after a WOT run and the ground strap is melted, then back the timing off a few degrees.  :2thumbs:

i feel right at home here. thats usually how i end up jetting 2 strokes, keep jetting down, blow a hole through top of piston and go up one. :smilielol:
