Anyone done a late model 5.2 or 5.9 swap?
« on: June 14, 2009 - 01:22:29 AM »
I have been thinking about putting a 90's Dodge truck engine and auto trans in my car (fuel injected/overdrive).  It wouldn't give me a lot of power, but it would mostly be for the reliability, driveability, and fuel economy.  I'm sure this has been done before, has anyone here done it and know how much modification is involved?  Mostly I mean as far as motor/trans mounts, driveshaft modification, etc.  The wiring I think I could figure out.  I know a lot of people are doing the new hemi swaps but those are still out of my price range.  Whole donor 94-up 2wd trucks and vans are getting pretty affordable now.  Thanks for any insight!

it should be an easy swap But I believe the motor mount id further back on the EFI blocks , you need to measure this & see what mount is available for thet , the next issue is the computer , , the factory one will work but may need cats & other ensors to work correctly , third issue is you will need to install an inline fuel pump like the Walbro unit as it is mounted on the frame in the fuel line & not intank , I am not sure what if any stand alone computers exist to run the engine or how to back poass inputs the factory computer may need to function correctly , the last issue is tranny tunnel clearance for the larger OD tranny

I guess I need to look at some things up close on these trucks.  I don't think I would have to run cats cause (although I may be wrong) I don't think they had a downstream O2 sensor.  The fuel system will take some minor modification, obviously as you say an electric pump mounted inline and I think I those trucks use a return line so I would have to plumb one in.  I would guess I would have to fabricate a trans crossmember.  I hadn't thought about that with the trans being larger, I thought maybe it would be longer, but I didn't think about it not fitting in the tunnel.  My guess is that it wouldn't be too hard to get it to run with the stock computer and harness, just might take some time trouble shooting afterwards to get it to not throw codes.  Does anyone else know the answer on whether the motor mounts will bolt up?  Thanks for the reply Chryco, you brought up a few points I hadn't thought about yet.
