    What Engines Do You Consider "Big?"

    For 1960s and 1970s Mopars (and American cars in general) what do you consider to be a "big" V-8 engine.

    I would say anything over about 375-cubic-inches to be a big engine (going by cu.-in., not external size).

    I consider engines like the Mopar 383, Chevy 396 and Ford 390 to be big. Of course, along with the even bigger engines like Mopar 400, 413, 426, 440; Chevy 400, 409, 427, 454; Ford 400, 406, 427, 428, 429, 460 and 462.

    A Mopar 361 I would classify as a medium sized V-8.

    Small Mopar V-8s 273, 318 and 340, although 340 may be medium-sized, especially considering the power they make.

    That seems to be about on par with how I feel about a big V-8.  Pretty much any actual big block engine (361, 383, 396, 400, 409, 413, 426, 427, 428, 429, 440, 454, 460, etc), but I'll take my mighty small block 340, please. :grinyes: :cheers:

    While all those are considered Big Blocks, to me "Big" mean 500ci and above.

    What's the biggest SB anyone's running on here?  I've seen several 408's...anything bigger?

    I have a 4.07" bore x 4" stroke 340 = 416

    I have never thought of the 472-cu-in engine in my '69 Cadillac as not big!

    As far as small blocks, I could be COMPLETELY wrong about this but I met a guy with a '71 Demon with what he sadi was a 454ci engine based on a 340 block.  He mentioned it was one of those race blocks Mopar has out, what's it called , a W-3 block or something?  :dunno: I just remembered the ci displacement because it was a Chevy displacement.  It was a race only car, I believe from Texas.

    There is one in town here about 466ci.  It is stroked more than 4" with a custom crank and R3 block and was big $$$$$.  He runs 10.00s with a street driven '68/9? 'Cuda.

    If we're talking muscle era cars, then I'd agree that over 500" is big for big blocks and over 400" is big for small blocks.

    In a modern car, anything over 300" is big.
