Correct air cleaner for '73 340?
« on: June 15, 2009 - 11:51:33 AM »
What is the correct air cleaner for a '73 340 'Cuda? I have a dual snorkle air cleaner that came with the car. Is that correct? For some reason I think that it should be the single snorkel with the flap, shown in the photo. Which is right?
( I know it says "440". I have the exact same air cleaner that says "340").

As far as I know, it should be a single snorkel air filter housing.

If you have the dual, unless you really want the factory look, I would keep that.  It's better for performance and you can hook up a pseudo "ram air" set up to it with some ducting to the front of the car.  :2cents:

As I understood it, it's dual snorkel for '70, no snorkel for '71, single snorkel with flapper for '72, and single snorkel solid bottom for 73-4. I'm no resto guy, but that's how I always found it.

Thanks everyone. I wasn 't sure of the years of the air cleaners I had. I am going to stick with the dual snorkel air cleaner. I agree it looks cooler and it might breathe a little better than a single snorkle.

That is a great link!  I didn't know the flapper door open at full throttle to let more air in!

My 73 340 duster had single snorkel, but no WOT flapper door.   If you calculate the cross section area of the single snorkel compared to area of all 4 throttle plates for thermoquad carb, the single snorkel is VERY restrictive.  The inlet area of the dual snorkel fixes the area match problem.
I changed to the "old" unsilenced air cleaner for my 340.
