HELP! draging noise
« on: March 03, 2010 - 08:49:35 PM »
Sorry for all dumb questions I have asked but this time something happened and i don't know where to start.
I took the car on a short hop around the neighborhood today after driving it yesterday to get tags.
On reaching the end of the block it felt like something dropped off and was dragging I came to a stop and the car would not move. I turned off the car in the middle of the street got out and to check if something had came off but nothing had,got back in and started it back up and it felt  like it had loosen up so I pressed on once it got moving again with the same dragging noise. I don't think its the trans a 727 that has just been rebuild and it sounded more to the rear of the car luckily i was with in 100 foot of the garage. It a 440 with a 727 8 3/4 73 Challenger is there a way to check the rear end gears?

Brakes possibly?  :dunno: Did the noise change any when you apply or release the brakes?

Noise didn't change when I pushed them, of course i will check them in the morning. I did jack it up and crawled underneath, the guy I took the car too used 1/2 fuel line going to a 3/8 fitting and a metal  clamp that cut into it  so i took a bath in gas when i bumped the fuel line  :banghead: been one of them days i guess I will take a break and deal with it in the morning. Good thing I am layed off have lots of time on my hands  and hey the weather is good here to! Now where did i put that bottle  :drunk: :drunk:.........

:iagree:  Jack up rear and spin the rear wheels, jab the brakes once or twice and retry, if drags then it could be a return spring inside, hope it is that simple for you.

Like Aussie said, jack it up and try to spin the wheels by hand.  The fact that the car was very tough to move and had a dragging sound makes me think it is brake related, quite possibly something to do with the E-Brake.

Sounds like you dropped the parking brake apply strut. That means that the brake adjusters are probably not working the way that they should. This happens a lot with car that don't get driven much, and we never think about the brake pedal going ever so slightly low.

Thanks, guys for the ideas I went out this morning and popped the cap off the master cylinder and found the front cell had no fluid in it so  i have a leak. Then i went around and looked at the back side of the tire nice and shiny!! So now i am thinking of bite the bullet putting disks brakes in the back.
