body cart/dolly thoughts?
« on: June 26, 2009 - 10:18:56 AM »
In getting things ready for the resto I am looking at body cart/dolly options.  Something I've seen several times is individuals supporting their auto bodies on the rocker pinch welds.  What do you think of that idea for our Cuda/Challenger's?  I'm a bit reluctant to do that and am considering building my own that would have very heavy latitude rectangular stock and then use longitude square tubing mounted in the front, mid, and rear.  The reason for that is because I will need to replace both rear frame rails and want to keep everything in place.

I dont know without having braces from front to rear on that.  I dont know if it would bend or not placing everything out of alignment.  Guess I will see what others think on this also.  what all will you have off the car when you do this?
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Well I purchased the car with both quarters removed, the rear footwell pans and trunk are almost gone.  My plan is to begin at the rear of the car by replacing the rear frame rails then the trunk.  I will then continue on with the rest of the entire floor.

I would build myself a decent frame construction, strong and square the same length as the carbody.  You have to be able to take measurements and maybe clamp parts to it.  :2cents:

I would think the front spring hangars would make a good mounting point for the rear

Dutch, Bullitt, I agree that some type of frame jig is the proper direction and I was looking at the front spring area today.   I would also want to brace and square it with that very rear cross member that the frame rails attach to.
