Tranny performance relative to idle speed
« on: July 01, 2009 - 09:45:30 AM »
I finally have been able to get my fish on the road...having some issues with idle and timing, so I may be (and hoping I am) premature in asking this....

When I came to a red light, I would put the tranny in neutral to keep the idle up......then I would put it into drive and if I dont wait a second or two, I get a delay in shifting...in other words, if I start gassing too soon, I get a jolt as the tranny kicks in.....

Should I be concerned?  Or is this simply a factor of my engine running crummy right now?

Also, The tranny seems to shift up and down fine on its own when driving.....Going up a hill, I can get it to kick down into 2nd, but not way down.....is that normal? I have the kickdown set all the way back at WOT.....at least I did before I installed carpet...wondering if the carpet is affecting my WOT now as I type this....

What transmission?
At least in 727 trans sometimes the rear clutch sealing rings make grooves to the sealing surface and the rings dont seal properly. The pressure buildup takes few seconds if they leak a lot. Just my 2 cents.  ???  Is the trans rebuilt or old?

It should go into gear pretty well instantly.  I would check the carpet on the kickdown issue.  :grinyes:

Well, at idle in neutral it shoots up to 1200-1300 or so...too high I know...

But when I shift to drive it drops real low real fast and wants to try and die and if I gas it too hard or soon it jumps......

Have you tried idle at 800rpm? Tranny should go to gear instantly, new at least.

Yeah I do think its related to my idle speed.....

My problem is the idle drops so low......

took her out yesterday and I think if I can lick this idle problem I will be halfway there.
