Hello, have pic and would like some insight
« on: July 07, 2009 - 04:22:20 PM »
Hi guys, I am not a body guy. To me itsgoing to be the hardest part of the restor, I would like any advise on the body. How do the rear qurter panles look? The passenger side of the car is in better shape then the drivers. I just dont know if I should have a body guy fab in new sheet metal where those holes are behind each rear tire, or look into new rear quarter panels? I dont think they look to bad, but then agine I dont really know. haha

Maybe I should look into getting the car bead or sand blasted to get down to the metal and see what I am daling with. I picked this car up about 6 mounths ago and just now geting into it, I have not done any work to it yet, besides gut it out.

That is the best way to go as there is usually a lot of hidden rust and bondo that shows up once you blast it and only then will you know how bad the quaters are.

Yeah I would feel better having it blasted, then going from there.I dont have a lot of money... well barely any at all haha, so I will be doing this project in stages. If I have it blasted at frist, will it rust right away? Or can I have it blasted then leave it inside and maybe put some coating on? Or I can look into media basting, but im sure its going to be more money.

Are there any members that live in he nortwest? I live in washington state, maybe someone knows where I could have the car media blasted.

If you plan to have it blasted, it is best to get it covered as soon as you can. Especially since you plan to do the body work in stages.  A good epoxy primer would work, but there are other options.  Some places that do blasting, can also prime it.
The surface rust will start quickly!

Hech if I were you I would try to mig in homemade patch panels myself! If you don't like it you can always replace the panel? I gain satisfaction from doing things myself.... and I'm cheap! :grinyes:   I find most people lack confidence, my attitude is "heck it's broke now what can I lose? Get into it ,give it a try! :2thumbs:

its only metal....you cant hurt it, and you will definately learn lots along the way.
clean it up, see what ya got to actually base on. it doesnt look that bad, but i think a body shop would scour your wallet.
waddya looking to do?
total restore?
driver?
both have totally differeant itineraries.
the answer to that is what guides you in the future.
they sell patches for that relatively cheap.
but you can cut around that  , use what you cut off to make a template, and and give it a go.

personally, id graft in some skins. and if you were a wee bit closer, id do it for free.

best of luck in whatever you decide.
and you have a great looking car there, dont let anyone detract your love for it.

I am not going for a matching number full 40K type restor "show car" at all. Its going to be a high hp car, more GO then show type, but I really want a stright clean body... I have more time then money now days, maybe I will look into doing some of the body work myself, I wouldnt take it to a body shop... I will look for someone to do some side work on it that knows what they are doing.

I have had bad experiences with body shops...  Do it yourself and you will save cash and gain knowledge.  You will also appreciate the car much more when finished.
