Valve Spring retainers
« on: April 05, 2010 - 09:22:46 PM »
I have Crane valve spring retainers on my 906 heads, I needed more spring so I got a set of Comp 924-16 springs but I find they're a triple spring, or 2 coils ans a dampener however you look at it. am I ok to run the dual srings with these retainers?  or how do you tell if they're compatible?

should be no issue as long as the inner & outer diameters of the retainer are compatable & they are a 10* retainer

There are single (non performance) springs; Single w/dampener(performance); Dual, which have a large outer, a dampener, and then a smaller inner(higher performance); Or triples, which have the single outer, a middle, and an inner spring. You can use a stock type retainer for singles (stock) and singles with a dampener, but you cannot use a stock type retainer for dual springs, nor can you run a dual spring on the factory cut spring seat or use a factory type valve seal.

I have positive valve seals so I should be ok, I need to look at the bottom of the retainer and  see what it looks like.

The bottom of the retainer has a step to hold the inner spring in place, my head has the positive seals and is machined about 1/8" smaller than the OD of the inner spring. everything fits and looks good but it is going to be possible for the inner spring to come in contact with the metal band on the teflon seal , I'm not sure if this is going to be an issue or not.

I wouldn't like the spring to be touching the seal, I don't know which spring will work though hopefully somebody will chime in.   :2cents:

They get close, but once the sprong's installed they dont wobble side to side much. The can rotate, but I think you're fine.
