Is a short shaft automatic good for anything?
« on: July 13, 2009 - 09:20:51 AM »
I recently bought a 440 out of a motor home, and the guy threw in the 727 automatic tranny for nothing. I noticed that it is a short shaft tranny, so I was wondering if they have any disadvantages/advantages over a regular 727, other than needing a different length drive shaft.

I would not use it in a car application , but it should have HD parts in it & can easily be converted to a normal long shaft / long tailhousing trans

Is it just a matter of taking off the short shaft and putting on the long one, or does it get more involved?

You have to completely tear down the transmission to change it.

Crap!

Oh well, I have a regular one to use, so no big deal. Might come in handy for the parts.

Thanks for the info.

The short shaft transmissions usually have the heavier duty parts in them so hang on to it.  :2thumbs:

Since I need to get a new drive shaft anyways, could I use the tranny, or is there some other reason it shouldnt be used in a car?

No,you can't use it. You have to use a carrier bearing/two piece driveshaft since there is no slip yoke on the transmission.
