thanks. everyone that i was googling was just coming up as a 6 pak 440. it is in a 66 newport

Yeah Drew,

  That is strange. V-code is the six-pack setup for a 440.

A Dodge Dart could be an "M Code", it would have a 440 in it.

Not sure about 66 but 67 lists a M code as a special order engine.

 is it in the Vin as in special engine
is itstamped on the front pad of the block for 77

I believe 440s stopped the letter numbering after 75. Then they had the year stamped in the pad. I may be wrong on that but I think so. The "M" code referred to normally is what Tom said. A special engine. The most common use is the 69 440 Darts and Barracuda (1st real Cuda). 440s were available in higher C bodies. It isnt a far stretch to think they could be ordered for a lower trim level car.
