I just have a stock style starter on mine, even with the headers I haven't had a problem since I replaced the old one over a year ago. And I don't run a heat shield either. Maybe my ancient boat anchor starter will eventually have issues, but for the price of that racing starter I could replace the stock one 3 or 4 times.

with the timing advanced it iwll be tougher to start hot , often adding a bit of fuel while cranking helps
the Mini starters are available in the wrecking yards for $30 or so too off older dodge trucks

Has your racing buddies application been on stock cars as opposed to race cars?
actually it goes on the street and the track ,with alot of heat i might add,but the car is not stock, but he has headers, and had the same issue i have had and has not since he changed starters long ago, like 13 years and it still turns over

I just replaced mine with a stock starter and it worked fine. Aint no way I'm ever gonna spend $300+ for a starter!
