Small Block Timing Set (chain & gears) question
« on: July 27, 2009 - 07:17:13 AM »
When you align the marks (bottom of cam gear, top of crank gear) is that the firing stroke of cylinder one TDC?

I would figure it is, but then when i pulled the distributor it was pointing at the back. The drive gear is in correctly.

This is in my '68 D100 truck.

Was the tower on the cap at that position connected to plug #1?

Apparantly it doesnt matter where the rotor ends up pointing as long as when you are TDC on #1 the rotor points to the tower conencted to #1.

I had the same issue when I swapped out my distributor....pointed to a different spot than the original...I just moved the wires around accordingly.....

My drivegear pointed to the front left corner of the block but the rotor pointed towards the center front as I recall....I guess its how the upper shaft is indexed to the lower shaft in the distributor.  :dunno:

with the cam gear @ 6 oclock & the crank @ 12 oclock you are usually firing #6

I agree with C P. Pulled my cam just last night. When @ TDC #1, my marks were at 12 0clock both crank and cam.

That makes sense by where it was pointing. Wouldnt you think they would have coordinated a little more so you're on the firing stroke of #1? Oh well, at least my marks are right.

BTW, it was the original Nylon cam gear with a crack and a tooth missing as well as the loosest chain ever!

the nylon gears actually hold up bettert than expected but it is typical to have broken teeth & loose chain , it will definatly run better with a new double rller chain though
