safety reminder
« on: July 28, 2009 - 05:59:57 PM »
This sad event was just up the street from me.  Use your head and stay safe.

Its unfortunate to say the least. I've witnessed this stuff a zillion times in my industry and on the street. A good safety reminder for sure!  :grinyes:

I started to crawl under mine the other day with just the jack holding it up, then I thought better of it and put the jackstands under it.

I try my best not to. It's easy to get focused on a project and forget the minor things that aren't so minor after all.

A very important reminder.  It took awhile but I always use jackstands whenever I have to crawl under the car.  I also make sure someone knows I'm going to be under it.  Not always convenient but definitely worth it from a safety stanpoint.

:iagree: Always a jackstands with a jack when going under a car.  I even get nervous going under a car when it's on metal ramps.  Always worry the ramps are going to fold up or something.  Me and my paranoid little mind.... :sly:

Oh yeah, safety first.
I do this for a living as a mobile mechanic every day.

Always use jack stands and wheel chalks, level hard pavement or large wood planks for a flat base under the jack and jackstand if working on dirt.

Never trust a floor jack regardless how beefy it is.

I had one brand new in the box, jack fail right before I slid the jackstand under it.
A couple more seconds earlier and I would have had a crushed skull.

We had a guy at work trying to get the spare tire out from under an F350 while someone else was loosening the lugnuts. When he was taking the hanger out of the rim the truck fell on his chest. Luckily it only broke a couple ribs, but he could've easily died under the weight of that truck. I always use jack stands.
