On the topic of additives, should I be running a lead additive in my 76 318 with J heads?  I am not sure what year the heads are....

You could add an idle solenoid like the 6-paks had.

Well it sounds like you have a problem in your idle circuit as well. You shouldn't have that big of an rpm drop going into drive!
If I cant fix it, it's broke
