    Cost estimate, for convertible top installation - reasonable, or sticker shock?

    I'm planning to have a new convertible top installed on my 1971 Barracuda. First I'll get the top from an aftermarket company, the price is around $330 with a glass window.  I went to an upholstery shop in Connecticut -- well established and they do good work, they said the installation would be $1,000.  Is that a liitle high? In 1984 I had my current top installed (which has lasted twenty years now) and the whole project, top included, cost under $500.  Inflation has changed things, but $1,000??  He said if they had to buy the top, it usually runs around $1600  :o!  Is this reasonable? or should I expect to have a quality job done for less.

    Don't know if this helps or not, but my husbands firebird is in need of a new convertible top.  We have an estimate of $1000 to install a new one...that includes the top itself with glass window.

    I got a quote from this shop first because I've had a few small items done there. But I'm starting to think they are on the expensive side. I'll call around and post some of the quotes.  Good thing about the first shop is they are close to where I work - so I could drop the car off. Better than having to schlep the car all over, to another city. Unless I can save $300 or $400.  :)
